In a time without music

the Cave Boy stood

by a murmuring stream

in a whispering wood,

and he heard the sounds

of that lonely place

near the hazel’s beauty

and the willow’s grace.

He plucked a reed

from the green bank there,

and he piped a tune

that was light as air . . .

Then the time without music

was changed indeed

by the skill of the boy

with the river reed.
