One day, Zhenzong promoted Yan Shu to be the Donggong

official who helped the prince study. The ministers were astonished and did not understand why the real sect made such a decision. Zhenzong said: \"recently, the ministers often went to drink and feast. Only Yan Shu studied behind closed doors and was so self respecting and cautious that he was the right candidate for the eastern palace official.\"

Yan Shu said after thanking him, \"I am actually a person who likes to play banquets. I am just poor. If I had money, I would have participated in banquets.\" These two events enabled Yan Shu to establish his credibility in front of the ministers, and songzhenzong trusted him even more.

晏殊谢恩后说：“我其实也是个喜欢游玩饮宴的人，只是家贫而已。若我有钱，也早就参与宴游了。”这两件事，使晏殊在群臣面前树立起了信誉，而宋真宗也更加信任他了。
